How do you get songs on your i-pod from i-tunes?

I just bought a ipod, and i wanted to know, do i need an i-tunes account to get started? like get started as in downloading songs onto my ipod. Also, a friend told me that there are some songs you can download for free. How do i find these songs? i really would appreciate it with anything you can answer. thanks!
